Diagnostic Medical Physicist

Duties:

  • Conduct annual diagnostic physics surveys and recertification of all diagnostic imaging equipment.
  • Provide 24-hour emergency response time for unanticipated and emergent equipment needs.
  • Perform annual quality assurance testing of all diagnostic x-ray and imaging equipment, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging and mammography equipment.
  • Conduct physics testing of diagnostic x-ray and imaging equipment following repairs affecting patient dosimetry or image quality.
  • Provide consulting services to support the Veterans Affairs North Texas Health Care System Radiation Safety Office, including attending committee meetings and reviewing the overall technical quality assurance program.
  • Perform patient and personnel occupational dose evaluations as needed.
  • Conduct initial installation quality assurance testing for new diagnostic x-ray, imaging, and mammography equipment.
  • Complete structural shielding design plans and radiation protection surveys for new or refurbished rooms or replacement equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable Federal regulations and recommendations for quality assurance testing from organizations such as the American College of Radiology and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine.
  • Report deficiencies or non-conformances discovered during inspections to the Radiation Safety Officer immediately and provide written reports within 14 working days.
  • Monitor and evaluate basic performance characteristics of diagnostic x-ray equipment, including image artifacts, spatial resolution, contrast, noise, and more.

Requirements:

  • Hold a master’s degree in Medical Physics, Health Physics, or a related field.
  • Board Certification by the American Board of Radiology or American Board of Medical Physics in Diagnostic Medical Physics.
  • Licensed by the State of Texas as a Professional Medical Physicist.
  • Meet all requirements for a qualified diagnostic medical physicist from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the American College of Radiology, the Mammography Quality Standards Act, the Food and Drug Administration, and The Joint Commission.
  • Minimum of ten years of experience providing diagnostic medical physics services following board certification.
  • Experience performing evaluations of at least 6 Magnetic Resonance Imaging systems under the direction of a Qualified Medical Physicist or Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scientist.
