Referral Clerk
Overview
The Referral Clerk provides administrative and clerical support to the 51st Medical Group by managing patient referral processes within the Military Health System (MHS). This position supports providers, patients, and medical staff by ensuring referrals are accurately prepared, processed, tracked, and documented in accordance with Department of Defense (DoD) and Defense Health Agency (DHA) standards.
Key Responsibilities
Referral Processing & Patient Support
Receive, review, and process medical referrals for specialty care
Ensure referrals are complete, accurate, and compliant with MHS and TRICARE requirements
Coordinate referral appointments with military treatment facilities and civilian providers
Communicate referral status and instructions to patients in a professional and timely manner
Administrative & Systems Support
Enter, update, and maintain referral data in authorized medical information systems
Track referral outcomes and ensure proper follow-up documentation
Maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and Privacy Act requirements
Prepare reports and provide referral status updates to clinical staff as requested
Coordination & Customer Service
Work closely with providers, nurses, and administrative staff to resolve referral issues
Respond to patient inquiries regarding referral status and next steps
Assist with problem resolution related to denied, delayed, or incomplete referrals
Deliver courteous, efficient customer service in a fast-paced clinical environment
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED
Experience in medical administration, clerical support, or customer service (medical setting preferred)
Familiarity with medical terminology and referral processes
Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn DoD healthcare systems
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing
