Job title: Maintenance Mechanics 

Location of job: central Alabama veterans’ healthcare system (CAVHCS), Montgomery and Tuskegee, Al.

Type of job: Full-time job

Schedule: 5 days a week for 8 hours each day for a total of 40 hours per week

Duties:

The employee shall:

  • Replace stained, missing, damaged ceiling tiles throughout the facility. You can replace those that you identify and those listed on the work orders distributed daily.
  • Use skills from a variety of trades such as plastering, carpentry and painting.
  • Install, repair, or replace doors and windows with all hardware, including locksets and closes.
  • Install various floor coverings and baseboards.
  • Install signs and warning devices on walls, posts, and other surfaces and structures.
  • Performs major overhaul and repair of all types of cylinder locks, padlocks, mortise locks, deadbolt locks, electric locks, rim locks, key-in-knob locks, time locks.
  • Conduct inspections and perform routine maintenance on area of responsibility assigned.
  • Construct/frame walls and applying drywall, mud, tape, and plaster
  • Patch and paint various surfaces.
  • Measure, cut, construct, or repair wood or wood substitute items.
  • Utilize written work orders with or without sketches and/or blueprints to carry out work.
  • Install protective wall coverings, corner guards, and handrails.
  • Work with wood or wood substitute materials, gypsum board or fiber-cement board materials, concrete/rebar, etc.
  • Install, modify, and repair furniture items.

Qualifications:

The employee must : 

  • Have at least 3 years documented experience in maintenance mechanics.
  • Be able to perform heavy work: lifting 50 lbs frequently and 75 lbs occasionally.
  • Be able to work at heights and climb ladders – (conditions of dizziness or vertigo, uncontrolled or poorly controlled insulin dependent diabetes, uncontrolled or poorly controlled seizure disorder or any condition that would interfere with alertness will be disqualifying.
  • Be able to work in confined spaces; (a history of claustrophobia, any physical limitation(s) interfering with agility or the ability to perform work in awkward and sustained postures such as severe progressive arthritis, or body size larger than the confined space opening will be disqualifying).
  • Work in heat – over 100 degrees F
  • Be able to stand and bend for long periods of time.
