Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled and experienced Generator Technician to join our team for a project at the USDA facility in Ames, IA. The successful candidate will be responsible for troubleshooting and maintaining Caterpillar Diesel Electric Generators, specifically the 3516 PGAL model with a capacity of 2000 kW, and unit control systems. This role requires a minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience with Caterpillar generators and proficiency in operating generators via an ISO control system.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform troubleshooting, maintenance, and repairs on Caterpillar Diesel Electric Generators (3516 PGAL) and associated control systems.
- Conduct routine inspections to ensure generators are operating efficiently and safely.
- Respond promptly to generator alarms and malfunctions, diagnosing issues and implementing solutions effectively.
- Utilize technical documentation and manuals to guide troubleshooting and repair processes.
- Collaborate with other technicians and facility staff to coordinate maintenance schedules and ensure minimal disruption to operations.
- Adhere strictly to security protocols and procedures outlined by the facility, including signing in/out, presenting valid government-issued ID, and wearing assigned badges at all times.
- Provide assistance with lockout/tagout procedures as needed, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including parts used, repairs completed, and equipment condition.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience troubleshooting Caterpillar Diesel Electric Generators (3516 PGAL) and unit control systems.
- Proficiency in operating generators via an ISO control system.
- Strong technical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret technical documentation and manuals effectively.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Must be a current US citizen in good standing.
- High school diploma or equivalent; relevant technical certifications preferred.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
Working Conditions:
- The position will be based at the USDA facility in Ames, IA.
- Work may involve exposure to various environmental conditions, including noise, dust, and inclement weather.
- Must be able to lift heavy objects and work in confined spaces as necessary.
