We are seeking an experienced Protestant Music Director to lead and support the Protestant music ministry at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. The Music Director will provide professional musical direction and accompaniment for weekly worship services, rehearsals, seasonal programs, memorial services, and other special chapel events.
The ideal candidate will have strong piano/keyboard skills, experience directing choirs or worship teams, and the ability to support both traditional and contemporary Protestant worship music.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct and support the Protestant chapel music program.
- Provide musical direction and accompaniment for weekly worship services and rehearsals.
- Skillfully play piano/keyboard during worship services and special events.
- Lead congregational hymns, worship songs, choir selections, and other musical elements.
- Direct and train choir members, vocalists, musicians, and worship team volunteers.
- Conduct at least one weekly rehearsal and provide musical support for at least one weekly worship service.
- Select, arrange, sequence, and rehearse appropriate Protestant worship music.
- Support traditional hymns, contemporary praise and worship music, preludes, postludes, and other standard Protestant worship elements.
- Arrange or adapt music based on the abilities and composition of the choir or worship team.
- Coordinate music selections and service requirements with the Protestant Chaplain.
- Prepare music for Christmas, Easter, memorial services, funerals, combined services, faith-specific holidays, and other special events.
- Assist with annual music ministry planning, calendars, budget recommendations, and volunteer training needs.
- Recruit and encourage participation among musicians, singers, and congregation volunteers.
- Ensure proper setup, sound checks, use, storage, and care of musical equipment.
- Maintain appropriate music copyright practices and documentation.
- Maintain professional conduct and respect the pluralistic, multi-faith military chapel environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Music or a related field, and/or at least five (5) years of church music ministry experience, or equivalent academic/professional credentials in a church or chapel environment.
- Strong proficiency in playing piano/keyboard.
- Ability to accurately read and perform written music at the appropriate tempo.
- Ability to sight-read, arrange, play, and score music.
- Demonstrated experience directing a choir and/or worship team.
- Ability to perform both traditional Protestant hymns and contemporary praise and worship music.
- Strong leadership, organization, and communication skills.
- Must be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English.
- Must be able to work effectively and respectfully in a multi-faith military chapel environment.
- Must successfully complete required background screening.
- Must provide professional references demonstrating favorable experience in music ministry or music direction.
Technical Audition Requirement
Qualified candidates must be prepared to complete a recorded musical evaluation/audition demonstrating:
- Piano/keyboard proficiency.
- Performance of traditional Protestant hymns.
- Performance of contemporary worship music.
- Ability to maintain correct tempo and smooth service flow.
- Basic choir/worship team direction skills.
